Originally
I’m from Kurdistan, North Iraq. I’m thousands of miles away now,
but my past stays with me in everything I create. I draw my
inspiration from what I was surrounded by as a child; the war,
hypocrisy, famine, death, but what inspires me to this day are the
suppressed women. The women who didn’t get to choose, who were told
what to do, say and how to behave. Through the years I’ve seen the men
of my country call the shots while the women nodded. I carry these
silent women wherever I go, They have inspired and intrigued me since I
picked up a pencil to draw.
I see them as being fragile, yet strong. They are afraid to speak up, but also fight everyday to survive.
Through my artistic expression I can try to give these women a voice and the freedom to speak.
By
living in a western country I’ve gotten the opportunity to dream and
make those dreams come to life, speak my mind without fear, choose a
future that I never saw possible in my own country.
What
I’m hoping to achieve is that I can create a possibility for
discussion, that social related subjects don't get swept under the rug,
that I might inspire just one person. |
